Bee blocks

Quilts for Siblings Together 2017

I completed two quilts for Siblings Together last year, Greenfields and Jewel Box, which were sent off at the beginning of June in time for gifting at the summer camps.

The Greenfields quilt top (previously seen here) was paired with an orange polkadot backing and jade green binding. I machine quilted it with a simple grid of horizontal and vertical lines.

Finished size 160 x 195cm. Completed 23/03/2017.

April was my month to request blocks in the Siblings Together Bee 2. I asked for Jewel Box blocks from this pattern using bright prints and a white background. This was my sample block:

...and the finished quilt:

You can probably see it was a bit of a windy day for photography! This one has a blue polkadot backing and a Kaffe Fassett vintage bead stripe for the binding. I machine quilted it outlining the diamond shapes formed wherever four half square triangles meet.

Finished size 160 x 200cm. Completed 20/05/2017.

I previously showed some of the blocks I made for other members of the bee in this post. The "bee year" runs from September to September and I have decided not to rejoin this time around, as I was struggling a bit for time and strangely fabric (no shortage of that as such, just that I never seemed to have the right colours/prints!).

So in the interests of completeness here are the bee blocks I made for 2016/17:

Quite a variety! I learnt that I struggle with the concepts of "wonky" and "low volume". I think the daisies and butterflies were the most fun to make!

Dog Gone Cute - a finished quilt

Hooray!

As mentioned previously April was my month as bee "Mama". I requested dog blocks made using this great pattern from Sew Fresh Quilts. My only stipulation was that the background colour should be bright and that a narrow border be added to the top and bottom edges (so that the sashing could be eliminated). I received some really great dogs!

This was my first experience of making a quilt from bee blocks and it hadn't occurred to me that there would be a discrepancy in the size of blocks (duh! In a block that has over 30 pieces!) and I can see why many people select blocks that can be trimmed to size. But I think it was worth the extra brain power it took to assemble,  it turned out better than I imagined and the dogs have so much more personality than if I have just made 12 blocks myself.

The quilt is bordered with steel grey Moda bella solid and bound with Moda dottie in black both purchased from Backstitch. The backing is an older Joel Dewberry print in orange and yellow.

It finished up slightly wider than long... 58.5 x 60.5 inches.

FAL 2016

Busy as a bee!

This year I joined a bee (my very first!) that makes quilts for the UK based charity Siblings Together. The charity help brothers and sisters who have been separated from one another by the care system maintain contact. You can read more about their work here, and find out about the quilting group here. More quilts are needed to reach our target of 100 for this years summer camps, so please do get involved if you can!

I have had fun trying out new-to-me techniques, and raiding the stash for appropriate fabrics each month. Here is a round-up of the blocks I have contributed so far...

April was my month as Mama, which I alluded to briefly here. The quilt top is complete, I'm hoping to get it quilted soon!

I look forward to seeing what my bee-mates have in store for me later on in the year!
